Friedl Dicker was an artist: a painter, graphic artist, scenic designer and interior decorator. She built sculptures out of metal, puppets out of wood, painted pictures, designed and arranged rooms... She is considered one of the most talented and versatile students of Bauhaus in Weimar and a pioneer of modern-day art therapy. As a Jew and a communist resistance fighter, she was persecuted by the Nazis.
Born in Vienna in 1898, murdered in Auschwitz in 1944 – she was 46 years old. She might have been completely forgotten had it not been for two suitcases in the attic of a girls’ home in the former Theresienstadt Ghetto, two suitcases full of children’s drawings...
Three performers, a director and a visual artist delve into the age of the Weimar Republic, the “golden twenties”, the Nazi era – and into the story of Friedl Dicker.
Selection committee statement excerpt:
“It approaches the subject matter on several levels by experimenting with various formats. The three actresses sometimes narrate as Friedl Dicker herself, sometimes report about her, and sometimes engage in dialogue. As the perspective changes, empathy makes way for reflection and vice versa. (...) The result is a portrait of a self-determined, strong-willed woman and artist as well as an era that must never be forgotten. How valuable it is to know Friedl Dicker so well now.”
Do you know Friedl Dicker? The painter, interior decorator, set and costume designer of the Bauhaus era who taught children to paint and draw in Theresienstadt camp from 1942 onwards? We didn’t know who she was. But Helios Theater has researched, collected and recreated what was lost to develop an exciting and touching work of documentary youth theatre about this female artist. It approaches the subject matter on several levels by experimenting with various formats. The three actresses sometimes narrate as Friedl Dicker herself, sometimes report about her, and sometimes engage in dialogue. As the perspective changes, empathy makes way for reflection and vice versa. The set is in motion, too, with canvases and objects that impart a feeling of openness. It provides room for historical film clips and marvellous yet deeply sad moments of shadow theatre. The result is a portrait of a self-determined, strong-willed woman and artist as well as an era that must never be forgotten. How valuable it is to know Friedl Dicker so well now.
