DWDW - the subject of water (world premiere)

Armada Theatre, Velbert
In Cooperation with Maschinenhaus Essen

The theatre is transformed into a TV studio: in front of a live audience, presenter Bobby Kim invites guests to talk about the topic of water. And, of course, no critically acclaimed TV show would be complete without danger-defying correspondents, exciting feature stories and a few show acts.

Bitingly relentless yet with a good dose of humour, Armada Theater tackles some important questions: how much water do we really use every day besides washing our hands, flushing the toilet and taking a hot shower? How much water does it take to make our jeans? What does European water consumption have to do with groundwater on the other side of our planet? And above all: who owns the water?

Selection committee statement excerpt:

“It’s all quite ingeniously done – on the one hand the audience can see how the images are created and on the other hand the detailed projections thereof. Together, the two sets of images create a convincing visual language. (...) It is almost embarrassing how much fun it is to watch this theatrical infotainment programme, which also includes commercial breaks, musical acts and live studio music.”

We are in a television studio, a warm-upper welcomes the audience and we practise when and how to clap. Then it starts, the intro is played on a video screen and the presenter of the evening is introduced: Kim, an investigative journalist Barbie doll with a penchant for adventure and clear words. And we learn what to expect: a mix of news coverage, show acts and reports on the subject of water. The main character of the evening does not speak: it is the cameraman who films the magnificent miniature scenic models made with simple means, which are then projected onto the screen. This takes us into outer space and a Texan desert or enables us to explore the Aral Sea, which is “recreated” on the body of a performer. It’s all quite ingeniously done – on the one hand the audience can see how the images are created and on the other hand the detailed projections thereof. Together, the two sets of images create a convincing visual language. In this way, Armada Theater conveys facts about water, for example what it is used for and in what quantities, what that means for the world, and what dangers human overconsumption of this finite resource could pose for our planet. It is almost embarrassing how much fun it is to watch this theatrical infotainment programme, which also includes commercial breaks, musical acts and live studio music.

Armada Theater is an independent collective from NRW founded by Clara Gohmert and Michael Zier. The group, whose work utilises cinematic means and experimental music as well as elements of puppetry, physical theatre and object theatre, has found its thematic focus in ecological issues.
