33 women (world premiere)

c.t.201, Cologne
Coproduction with COMEDIA Theater, Cologne

The world is full of strong women. They rock politics, art and science. And their private lives? They manage that on the side too, of course. But no matter how much they do, the spotlight is usually on their male counterparts who like to toot their own trumpets.
Actress Sibel Polat has had enough and clears the stage for 33 notable women. She introduces them and their issues and makes sure they (finally) get the recognition they deserve.
Jay Leno, Larry King, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon? Men make way for the host of the century: Sibel Polat. At last, she’s bringing the important issues to the table in a format that is so late-night that it sometimes takes place in the morning. Polemical girl power built on (menstrual) blood, sweat and tears.

Selection committee statement excerpt:
“Here the stage belongs to a woman, the great Sibel Polat. She uses the limitations of the format to her advantage and pushes the boundaries of what is playfully possible. She pulls the strings, plays with the audience, sings when it suits her or not, brings in her sidekick or sends him packing again and lets the audience participate in her very personal selection of 33 female biographies that she thinks everyone should know.”

"A one-woman show in the format of a US talk show. It features: an unusual sidekick, a huge desk, screens, music, a live audience, satire, comedy and information. On television, this genre is predominantly – not just in the USA – dominated by men. Here the stage belongs to a woman, the great Sibel Polat. She uses the limitations of the format to her advantage and pushes the boundaries of what is playfully possible. She pulls the strings, plays with the audience, sings when it suits her or not, brings in her sidekick or sends him packing again and lets the audience participate in her very personal selection of 33 female biographies that she thinks everyone should know. This performance is very personal, her view is the dominant one and she plays with it skilfully. Here a woman has the power on stage: over what is told, how it is told and why it is told.  Sibel Polat is approachable and open at all times, even though she definitely shows how good it feels to be the boss in the ring. The modern format alone makes this play ideal for a young generation of theatre-goers. They are not only presented with 33 strong women’s biographies and role models, but 34."

Ever since its founding in 1993, c.t.201 has developed unconventional theatre productions that address socially relevant issues and provide a variety of directors and theatre professionals with a basis for their artistic work. We endeavour to seek and find new ways of getting in touch with the audience in an effort to produce communicative theatre. Our work is thus based on an open-minded, experimental, inclusive and thematic approach.
