Master of disaster (world premiere)

Theatre Marabu, Bonn

A task force goes around to schoolyards, parks and other public places to keep order. Rubbish has to be disposed of, parks maintained, playground equipment serviced and safety hazards eliminated. The squad members do their work diligently and with dedication, sometimes even playing brass-band music or warbling a tune when the job is done. But this time everything is different. Suddenly, a mysterious object appears that doesn’t seem to belong to anyone. How did it get there? Who put it there? And what’s in it?

The task force pulls out all the stops to avert an impending catastrophe.
With a good dose of absurd humour and bold & brassy music, the six performers tackle modern-day worries and fears with a demonstration of unshakeable confidence. An open-air spectacle with music for brass and wind instruments.

Selection committee statement excerpt:
“This is street theatre at its best: the audience is always involved in the action, the situation is concrete and takes place right here, in this schoolyard, in this public square. This is literally barrier-free and accessible to all spectators, whether children or adults, whether they speak German or not. "

In this open-air musical theatre performance, in this work of slapstick street theatre for children aged 6 and over, the ensemble plays for all they’re worth. Not only do the tuba, saxophone and trumpet players demonstrate a mighty range, but the actors do as well. And it is fun to watch when the six performers, with the utmost seriousness, identify a school bag as a hazardous object and do their utmost to render it harmless for 45 minutes. The timing is perfect, the characters lovingly sketched oddballs who go about their work in the most awkward way. This is street theatre at its best: the audience is always involved in the action, the situation is concrete and takes place right here, in this schoolyard, in this public square. This is literally barrier-free and accessible to all spectators, whether children or adults, whether they speak German or not. The performers hardly need words to tell the story. Only at the very end does language become important, and what can be heard are ... children. Their voices are released from the satchel and resound in all directions. They tell of their worries during this long COVID time and of the fears they have – things which belong to them just as much as the satchels on their backs. And with a lot of ballyhoo, a portion of pathos, with music and humour and a good dose of theatre magic, Theater Marabu assumes the task of taking children seriously, rendering them visible and audible. Worries become lighter when a (theatre) community carries them.
