Spectacular Failures
(world premiere)

performing:group, Cologne
A coproduction with tanzhaus nrw, COMEDIA Theater and Theater FELD

In a world that considers attention an important resource, it has not only become necessary to fulfil expectations, but to constantly outdo one’s previous performance. In light of the risk of being sucked into the maelstrom of a society with zero tolerance for mistakes, performing:group has created a merciless spectacle of the faster-higher-further principle in the ongoing struggle for audience attention.
Dance is beautiful, but it takes a lot of work. If you are too slow, if you fail to integrate into the group or if you question the system, you’ll get the boot! No job, no money, no likes.

Four dancers try out a constant stream of new scenes and choreographies on stage. Not failing is not an option. Every evening anew. Every performance is a world premiere!

Selection committee statement excerpt:

“As they practise, they keep their eyes on the others at all times: who will be the first to break ranks? … And, one by one, each of them halt, pause, lag behind the beat or the others. Their moments of failure make them quite endearing."

“Spectacular Failures” actually tells us a lot about theatre. When the performers bring their costumes and props on stage at the beginning, they are preparing for the big show – for functioning, for persevering, for meeting expectations and for feedback. Flexibly, to beats and piano sounds, the four dancers go round and round practising their moves: forwards, backwards, jumping, turning. The most appealing way to put on stockings, the most expressive musical performance. As they practise, they keep their eyes on the others at all times: who will be the first to break ranks? … And, one by one, each of them halt, pause, lag behind the beat or the others. Their moments of failure make them quite endearing. As do the open and honest questions they pose: what are your impressions? What was your favourite moment? Who is really giving the stage directions here? As much as the four of them strive for a collective persona, they remain exciting in their individuality – one of them self-deprecating, the other approachably radiant. With moments of rhythmic, frenetic determination, with moments of pausing and repositioning and with humour that borders on tragedy, performing:group actually tells us a lot about life."

performing:group is an internationally active, interdisciplinary dance and theatre ensemble from Cologne. They aim to develop works that make complex and socially relevant issues tangible as a sensory experience for all age groups. They often seek out non-verbal and physical yet humorous and sonorous presentation styles on stage that consciously allow for ambiguity. Since 2013, their productions have toured in over 20 countries.
