IKAR - on water, on land, in the air

echtzeit-theater, Münster
A coproduction with COMEDIA Theater Köln

Young Ikar decides to go out in search of his father, who has been missing for a long time. The ruthless King Minos had commissioned his father to build a labyrinth on the island of Kritti to protect its citizens from a dangerous monster.
Ikar ventures to the centre of the labyrinth. There he does not meet a monster, but Minotaur, who tells him of an impending natural disaster. Will Ikar manage to warn the citizens of Kritti in time?
IKAR is a modern adaptation of a legend on the way mankind treats, neglects and exploits nature as well as the potential of each individual to change the world. At the same time, Katrin Lange uses the character Ikar to demonstrate how important it is not to believe everything unquestioned and to get to the bottom of things. The production works with elements of narrative, shadow and musical theatre.

Selection committee statement excerpt:

“But the ensemble doesn't just tell the story, it renders it visible, audible and tangible. The stage becomes a showcase of sound art, the production of a total work of art of language, sound and shadow theatre."

"What an atmosphere! The ensemble of Echtzeit-Theater tells the story of young Ikar as he sets out to find his father, who is constructing a labyrinth prison on the island of Kritti by order of the region’s dictatorial king. But the ensemble doesn’t just tell the story, it renders it visible, audible and tangible. The stage becomes a showcase of sound art, the production a Gesamtkunstwerk of language, sound and shadow theatre. And the text by Katrin Lange, which linguistically explores the ancient myth of Icarus and Daedalus in an intriguingly complex way, becomes an exhilaratingly emotional rush of storytelling that really pulls the audience in. The performers relate their plights in various ways – sometimes literally, sometimes as narrators, sometimes solo, sometimes in pairs, sometimes in chorus. And to top it all off: they switch roles – a simple way to abolish any gender-specific attributions. Ikar is a child. A courageous child. Ikar resolutely climbs the ship’s mast to cross over to the island. In actuality, it is the ladder of a wooden structure that also functions as an instrument holder. Pipes, barrels and pots hang there, which are wonderfully transformed into percussion instruments under the musical direction of Dominik Hahn. The play becomes sound, but so do the voices and the language. They drive each other on, only to fall completely silent shortly thereafter. Moments of adventure that we, the audience, are able to experience with Ikar and his parents, with the king’s daughter Ariadne and her monster brother Minotaur. Ancient myth and the present come touchingly close."

The company echtzeit-theater from Münster is dedicated to maintaining close, candid audience interaction while confronting young people with stylistic and aesthetic impulses they have never encountered before in addition to revealing and discussing the creative potential of theatre. The ensemble regularly collaborates with a variety of different artists and its productions have been invited to multiple national festivals.
